Typography Keyboard Layout for Mac and Windows

with   Smashing magazine

  
 

The Layout lets you enter characters usually unavailable on a keyboard with ease, and this is how it looks:

Use the right Alt key to enter the characters, e. g. Alt + < and Alt + > will output the “quotation marks.” The characters on top are entered by also pressing Shift, e. g. Alt + Shift + C will output ¢.

Setup

  1. Run setup.exe.
  2. Go to Control Panel, Regional and language options (or International).
  3. In the layout list, replace the layout for the English language with the new one.

Something went wrong or doesn’t work? Vista? Reboot is likely to help.

Removing

Use “Setup or remove software” dialog from Control Panel after you’ve changed the layout back to the default one in International.

By The Way

In Windows, right Alt works like Ctrl + Alt.

Setup

  1. Copy both files found in archive to /Library/Keyboard Layouts.
  2. Go to System Preferences, open International, then Input Menu.
  3. Enable the layout:
     English — Ilya Birman Typography.

It is likely that Mac won’t let you disable the system  US layout, however it will not cause any problems.

Layout starts working in each app after it’s restarted.

Removing

Same as setup, but vice-versa ;-)

 

I have created the Russian Typography Layout in 2006, and it quickly gained a wide acceptance among web and print designers and many other people who just happen to care about text that looks good. Today it’s used in major Russian design bureaux and studios. The Layout is being recommended by different LiveJournal users to each other almost every day :-)
